Cohill's Inn: A Touch of Ireland in Lubec

by Jennifer Multhopp, from The Lubec Light

"We want to create the comfortable, welcoming atmosphere we encountered in the inns and pubs we visited during our trips along the Irish coast," said Ellen Gearren who, along with her husband Jack, opened Cohill's Inn on July 1. Formerly The Lighthouse Inn and Chowder House, the business now bears the name of Ellen's late father, Ray Cohill.

The New Jersey couple decided to purchase the nine-room inn due, in large part, to its ideal location in the heart of Lubec, offering panoramic views of the Narrows and Bay of Fundy. Ellen and Jack discovered Lubec five years ago and were immediately drawn to its natural beauty, which reminded them of the fishing villages they had visited in Ireland. They purchased a home here three years ago, traveled from New Jersey often, and have made many friends in town. "The Town Office has been very cooperative and helpful every step of the way and we really appreciate that. And so many of our friends here helped to make this possible for us," said Ellen. "This isn't just a business for us. We chose Lubec as our home and we want to do everything we can to contribute to this community."

They seek to create a welcoming ambience - a gathering place where people can come to catch up on the news, visit with old friends and make new ones. Among their many plans for Cohill's the new owners hope to show films during the winter months, provide Scrabble and other board games for customers to enjoy and offer space, at no cost, to local artists who wish to exhibit their work.

The fully licensed pub offers a menu, posted on the blackboard, that will change daily and feature fresh, seasonal products. Salads, soups and stews - comfort food - is the specialty of the house. While not occupied as innkeepers the Gearrens raise and show Bernese Mountain Dogs and Australian Shepherds and can frequently be seen trailing their canine herd through the streets of Lubec. Jack and Ellen invite everyone to stop in and see what Cohill's has to offer.
